I have worked part time in a store during high school and I am looking to go to university. What should I take to get a job with Sobeys after I graduate?

Does Sobeys offer any scholarships to students going to post secondary institutions?

Funding from Sobeys Inc. and contributions from the Sobey family support several scholarship programs to assist young people in their individual effort to attain the education so necessary to succeed today.

The Sobeys & Empire Work Experience & Scholarship Program awards numerous scholarships. The program also offers Future Leader Awards which include support of up to $10,000 in total over four years of full-time study and summer internship employment opportunities.

I am a student who is looking for part time employment but I need a schedule that fits my life. Are working hours flexible at Sobeys stores?

Yes. Flexibility is something that all students look for in a part time job. Work schedules for store roles vary by store so when you submit your resume, be sure to include what hours you are available to work.

My knowledge of Sobeys is that you are a grocery store. Are there other options for places to work?

Yes! Sobeys is much more than just a national grocery chain. As well as careers in-store we also provide support for those stores through our retail support centres and our national and regional corporate offices throughout the country.

If I get a job at Sobeys, and then want to attend college or university in another city/town, would I be able to transfer to a store location in that city/town?

If a job becomes available at a location in the city where you will be attending school, you will have an opportunity to be transferred to that store location.

Does Sobeys offer any interenship programs or co-op programs for students?

We offer a wide array of work experience placements within the various facets of our business. These positions can be in a variety of departments including Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, Store Operations, Merchandising, Marketing, Information Technology, and many other areas. Recruitment for our summer internship positions take place in the spring. Co-op positions are posted on this site as they become available.

My school has a career fair each year. Will there be a Sobeys representative that I can talk to?

We try to have some representation at local career fairs but sometimes we are unable to attend every event. We recommend that you speak with a contact person from your school to see if Sobeys is attending.

I am very interested in reducing my carbon footprint and I would like to find an employer that feels the same way. Is Sobeys trying to be green company?

From coast to coast we supply thousands of products to over 800 communities making the issue of environmental sustainability a significant priority. We’ve introduced initiatives like our reusable grocery bag, in-store conservation programs and all new building projects are done to LEED standards. We recognize that it can’t be done overnight but we are working with current and new employees to create greener communities.

Outside of work I am very interested in volunteer work within the community. Are there opportunities for me to get involved in helping out with different organizations?

Absolutely. Sobeys’ success centers around its core values, one of which is to “Proudly Serve our Community”. Across the country our employees support various charities, take part in many fundraising events, and volunteer their time to help out to ensure these events are a success. Our passion for food extends beyond our stores and into our community.

How to

Instructions for attaching a file to
your application:

Some of our job postings may request a copy of your transcript or other relevant file to be attached as part of the job application process.  Any type of document can be attached to your profile (such as cover letters, transcripts, reference letters, etc.) but the system is limited to accept two attachments at any one time.  If you combine cover letters, resumes, and other items into one Word (.doc) or Adobe (.pdf) file, it will only count as one file.

When you are in the resume text editor during the job application process, you can copy and paste your cover letter or transcript text into the resume text editor, along with your resume text.  Otherwise, once the application process is completed you can attach an electronic copy of your cover letter or transcript to your profile by following these steps:

Click the ‘Career Center’ link in the top menu.

Once in your Career Center click on the ‘Resume Attachments’ link.

Click ‘Add New Resume Attachment’ on the right side of the page.

In this section you can now upload your transcript file by clicking the ‘Browse’ button and locating the file on your computer, then clicking.

You can now click the ‘Add Resume Attachment’ button and wait for your file to upload.  Once the upload process is complete, you will be displayed a list of
successful file uploads now attached to your profile.

Please note: Total attachments size limit is 200 kilobytes.  Here are some tips to assist you with creating a smaller file size, if necessary, in order to upload it to the system.

  • If you are using a scanner to scan a hard copy of your transcript, you will need to set the scanner setting to save the file as a low resolution image.
  • One option to create a smaller file size is by taking a screen shot of your online transcript by holding your ALT key and pressing the Print Screen button on your keyboard when the document is open, then pasting the image  into a text editor such has WordPad or Microsoft Word.
  • Microsoft Word documents can be saved as .DOCX files which are smaller than the standard .DOC file.
  • Adding your file to a zipped folder can also help to keep file size low by right clicking on your transcript file and selecting ‘Send to > Compressed (Zipped) Folder’ then choosing this file during upload.
