Retail Council of Canada
When we discovered that installing a natural refrigeration system using CO2 gas instead of artificial gas would reduce our annual carbon emissions by up to 62 percent per store, we made this the standard for our new stores and retrofits across the country. We have installed more natural refrigeration systems than all other food retailers in North America combined. Consequently, in 2013, the Retail Council of Canada recognized us with an Excellence in Retailing Award for Energy and Environmental Sustainability. Our Quebec office originally led the initiative, and 29 of our stores across Canada were recognized with GreenChill’s platinum-level certification award for notable achievements using natural refrigeration systems. We’re proud of this initiative and continue to seek out greener solutions for our company.
Top Women in Grocery
In recent years we’ve seen our female leaders gain industry recognition for the impact they’re making. In 2014, Mary Dalimonte, Senior Vice President of Merchandising and Commercial Programs, received the Progressive Grocer’s Top Women in Grocery award. In that same year, Dalimonte added another industry award to her accomplishments: the Italian Chamber of Commerce of Ontario awarded her with the Food and Beverage Industry Award. The year 2014 was also a big one for Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary Karin McCaskill, who was honoured as General Counsel of the Year at the Canadian General Counsel Awards. She was recognized in part for her legal leadership in the $5.8-billion acquisition of Canada Safeway, as well as for her overall leadership within Canada’s General Counsel community.
Pictou County Chamber of Commerce
Our company found its start just over a century ago in Pictou County, N.S, so it felt like a homecoming to be honoured at the Pictou County Chamber of Commerce gala in 2014. Sobeys was named Large Business of the Year in recognition of our legacy, our support for local community and achievements such as the acquisition of Canada Safeway and our Better Food Movement. Our Big 8 Beverages won the NSBI Export Recognition Award, based on its innovation and business excellence. The only beverages facility of its kind in Canada that produces both soft drinks and spring water, Big 8 has exported over 600,000 bottles as far afield as China, Barbados and Aruba.
PAC Packaging Consortium
Our partnership with celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has been a great success, in part because his values align so well with those of our Better Food Movement. Our packaging for products tied to the Better Food for All campaign also made waves in the industry: we were recognized at the PAC Packaging Consortium 2015 Global Leadership Awards for Brand Marketing–New Brand, Food, for Compliments Presents Jamie Oliver Discovers Canada. Our Compliments Gluten-Free range also took home a PAC award.
Shopper Innovation Awards
We launched our Better Food for All app in 2014 to respond to our customers’ needs for a one-stop place to access recipes, discounts, store information, customized grocery lists and tips while on the go. We were thrilled when it was rewarded with bronze and silver at the Shopper Innovation Awards, as well as being named Best Branded Mobile/Tablet App at the Digiday Retail Awards.
Military Employment Transition Program
At Sobeys, we support our troops and want to do our part to help them make a smooth transition from their military careers. We’re proud to be a Certified Military Friendly Employer and participant in the Military Employment Transition Program.

I started as a part-time cashier 38 years ago, and I was fortunate to have a franchisee who cared about my development, and challenge me to expand my horizons and do different things. The time and investment that they made; I wouldn't be where I am today without that.
